TRIREME Workshop in Gothenburg Explores the Challenges of Automotive Transformation

On 3 November 2026, Gothenburg, Sweden, hosted a regional workshop within TRIREME, bringing together European and national stakeholders to discuss the challenges and implications of the transformation of the automotive industry.

Hosted with the participation of the Swedish social partners Technology Industries of Sweden, IF Metall and Unionen, the workshop provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the changes affecting Europe's automotive sector, particularly in the context of the green transition and the shift towards electric vehicles.

Discussions focused on the implications of industrial transformation for companies, workers and regional ecosystems. Key topics included the anticipation of changing skills needs, workforce adaptation, investment in training, upskilling and reskilling, and the importance of maintaining industrial expertise and capacity in Europe.

The workshop also explored approaches to addressing these challenges through cooperation between employers and workers' representatives, taking into account experiences and practices from different national and regional contexts.

Gothenburg offered a relevant setting for these discussions, given its longstanding industrial tradition and its prominent position in Sweden's automotive ecosystem.

The workshop forms part of TRIREME's work to examine the social impact of the transformation of the automotive sector and identify approaches to support the development of the skills needed for its green and digital transition.

The insights gathered through the regional workshops will contribute to the project's ongoing work on joint policy recommendations, addressing the challenges of industrial transformation, evolving skills requirements and the role of social partners in supporting the transition.
